Kenya Police suspends top officers over fake cop
Kenya National Police Service Commission has suspended top Rift Valley cops over the Nakuru fake policeman.
Rift Valley PPO John M’mbijiwe is among those who were axed. The PPO has been photographed several time with the imposter Joshua Waiganjo.
Other officers who have been suspended include the Anti Stock Theft Unit boss Remi Ngugi and Njoro OCPD Njeru Nthiga. Waiganjo has been charged today in Naivasha.
Officers from the special crime unit arrested Waiganjo who masqueraded as the deputy PPO Rift Valley Province for five years.
The imposter who has left Kenyans baffled was first charged in a Naivasha court on January 3. Waiganjo was charged for robbery with robbery with violence, impersonation and a fourth of been in possession of assorted police uniform.
The suspect was among those who joined M’mbijiwe in a tour of Suguta valley in Baragoi after the killing of over 42 police officers by bandits. He sat opposite the interdicted PPO in the police helicopter.
It has also emerged that the suspect had sacked over ten police officers in various police stations he visited in Rift Valley
before he was exposed. But M’mbijiwe in a press conference in Nakuru on Sunday refuted claims that the fake cop had sacked any officers.
The suspect’s father Bishop Ephraim Waiganjo last week told media in his Njoro home that his son was a genuine police officer. He gave out photos of M’mbijiwe at his home during the burial of his late mother. Among other photos released by the family showed Waiganjo in active duty with senior officers.
“My son was even promoted to the rank of deputy PPO and we had a party for him,” said the father. He had a goat, a gift from his bosses to prove his claims. The family agrees that Waiganjo never attended police training but he was a police reservist. M’Mbijiwe on his part has maintained that Waiganjo was appointed by the former Police Commissioner Mathews Iteere as the leader of police reservists in Rift Valley.
Sources privy to the busting of the fake cop say after the Suguta meeting investigations were started and Waiganjo was arrested in full police uniform of an assistant commissioner of
police.Investigations had revealed that the man had for years engaged in highway robbery mainly along the Nairobi-Nakuru road.
President Mwai Kibaki has already ordered a probe into the saga a day before the PPO was grilled by senior police officers led by the new Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.
