Troops from the Kenyan Contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) sit on the mid-section of a military truck in Somali port city of Kismayo.

One Kenya Defence Forces soldier was killed in a fire exchange with al shabaab in Kismayu yesterday.During the exchange five militias were felled by KDF.

“Regrettably, during the Kismayu – Bulahaji engagement leading to neutralizing of 5 militants, KDF lost a soldier,” said KDF in a statement.

The Chief of the Defence Forces paid tribute to the fallen hero for his bravery and commitment in liberating Somalia adds the statement. The al shabaab who were smoked out of Kismayu early this month had attempted to set up an observation post along the Kismayu-Bulahaji Roa.

“AMISOM remains committed to protect the hard-won security gains in order to ensure that Somalia continues on the road to sustainable peace,” said KDF.

” This led to the recovery of two AK 47 and an RPG During the interception at Kolbio,” said the statement.

It is the first time there has been an exchange with the al shabaab after they were flushed out of their stronghold in Kismayu. Last week, four Uganda People’s Defence Forces(UPDF) soldiers were killed during a fight on their way to Baidoa.

Economic operations at the Port of Kismayu continue to improve with five ships carrying foodstuff and cement docking at the port of Kismayu which has been under Al shabaab for years.
