Somalia Al shabaab militias yesterday announced  they have abandoned their 5-year hold of lucrative port city of Kismayu.

“The military command of Shebab mujahedeen ordered a tactical retreat at midnight,” Al Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage told AFP.

The ragtag militia further tweeted its surrender of their last stronghold after firepower with the much superior  Kenya Defence Forces,KDF.

“Last night(Saturday September 29), after more than 5 years the Islamic administration in #Kismayo closed its offices,” reads a tweet by @HSMPress the Al shabaab Twitter handle.

Al shabaab in its usual style of empty threats  warned of dire repercussions to the Kuffar(Non Muslim believers).

#Kismayo shall be transformed from a peaceful city governed by Islamic Shari’ah(laws) into a battle-zone between Muslims & the Kuffar invaders,” say Al shabaab.

The Somalia militia  are said to be living in a forest between Kismayu and Afmadow after they were flushed out of the city early Friday.

KDF with help from the Somalia Transition Government, TGF, soldiers  launched a beach attack at night which caught the militant unawares. Residents of Kismayu were forced to stay indoors until mid morning as gunfire pounded the city.

Kenya’s military spokesman on Somali mission Colonel Cyrus Oguna,  said Kenyan troops used “an amphibious operations which are complicated, delicate and highly dangerous to execute.”

Kismayu has been seen by analysts as the soul of al shabaab who gets most of the funding from the Port. Kismayu was a route for illicit arms, and the fees the group  imposed on all the goods imported through Kismayu helped finance its suicide bombings and assassination campaigns.
